Ohio senior golfer Megan Weaver is looking at the Mid American Conference tournament in a five-word phrase: go big or go home.
Ohio will pit itself against the MAC for three days at the Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, Ind.
The Bobcats are coming off a successful tournament at Bowling Green’s Falcon Invitation, where they placed third.
It was the Bobcats’ best finish in a tournament in two years. Ohio coach Kelly Ovington said it is hard to compare two rounds, however the momentum is a factor that stays with the team.
“The feeling you have from that round and from playing successfully under those conditions has got to give them confidence,” Ovington said. “I know it gives me confidence in them and I truly believe they’re going to go in there feeling like they can win the whole thing.”
Ohio is familiar with the course they will be playing on. The 6,127-yard, par-72 course was the site of the MAC Preview Tournament that the Bobcats played in October.
The Bobcats finished eighth of 14 in the preview.
Ovington said one of the main things Ohio needs to do is to control what they can control in order to simplify the game.
“Really at this point there’s not much you can do. You’ve got your game and you jut want to gain some confidence,” Ovington said. “These last couple days, we have been building some confidence working on what you need to work on, and hopefully everything kind of falls together.”
Weaver said Ohio would face strong competition in the first round, which she believes should bode well for the Bobcats.
“We’re playing with basically the best two team in the MAC in the first round so I’m looking at it as a positive because you play better with better competitors,” Weaver said.
This will be the last tournament for the Weaver sisters, Megan and Meryl who have been major contributors to the Ohio golf team during their four years.
Ohio will tee off at the same time as Kent State and Eastern Michigan on Friday. The second and third-round pairings will be determined based on the team’s score in the first round.
