Whether he’s performing as Bobby Bottleservice, Fabrice Fabrice, El Chupacabra, or an old man drinking tuna and vodka, comedian Nick Kroll is anything but predictable when on stage with a microphone in hand.
“If someone tells you what type of comedian they are, then it’s boring,” Kroll said. “You should expect to see a dramatic 45-minute monologue, no jokes. I want people to see the serious side of Nick Kroll. Or, it could just be 45 minutes of weed and dick jokes.”
Kroll began to be associated with the comedy world after acquiring a role on the hit FX series, The League, scoring supporting roles in movies including Get Him to the Greek and creating his sketch comedy show, The Nick Show Kroll, which will feature his many characters inspired by the streets of New York.
Yet his next step was an obvious choice as he joined the Comedy Central on Campus tour and prepared to visit the No. 1 party school, or as he knows it, “the school with the hot tub kid.”
“But really, I’ve heard about Athens from a couple of friends who have been through who said it was a fun place, and I also heard that it’s a spooky town,” he said. “I’m psyched to see it and check it out.”
Kroll said he felt lucky to be able to make a living off making jokes and “acting like an idiot” every day. He added that he and his colleagues on The League do actually have a fantasy football league, which is just as competitive as the series.
“I am the reigning champion. I beat Mark Duplass, who plays Pete, and it felt pretty good,” Kroll said. “I was always a football fan but I never did fantasy until we did the show and … we play for pride and bragging rights so I will be doing plenty of that this season.”
The comedian, along with Joe Mande, was booked for $10,000 after a quick decision made by the university’s Performing Art and Concert Series to include the show in this year’s lineup.
“We wanted at least one comedian to come to campus during the Spring Quarter in addition to Wiz Khalifa and (In the Heights) later on,” said Andrew Holzaepfel, the associate director of the campus involvement center. “I expect it to be a really funny show. I’m a big fan of The League and I think it will give students a chance to see Kroll before he becomes a big name.”
