Ohio will formally introduce its next head men’s basketball coach on Tuesday, according to Ohio Athletics officials.
Ohio assistant athletics director for media relations Tom Symonds confirmed that the department will hold a press conference Tuesday to name a new head coach. That coach likely will be Jim Christian, who has emerged as the lead candidate for the job in recent national media reports.
Christian has 10 years of head coaching experience, including six at Mid-American Conference member Kent State. He has led Texas Christian’s program for the last four seasons.
Ohio center Ethan Jacobs confirmed that the team convened for a meeting Monday morning, but he said he could not discuss if the team had been introduced to a new head coach.
Christian had a 138-58 mark during his six years with the Golden Flashes. That gives him the highest winning percentage of any coach who has led a MAC team for at least five years. His 76-28 mark in conference play is good for the second highest winning percentage in conference history among coaches with five years of conference coaching experience.
Ohio point guard D.J. Cooper tweeted Sunday night that Jim Christian would be the team’s new coach. He reportedly was not at the team meeting this morning because he was on a flight to Houston.
Christian made about $600,000 a year at TCU. No Ohio University employee makes $400,000 a year.
