The Pick of the Week for Spring Quarter Week 2 is Monday's front page, designed by Ashley Cappellazzi. This page was chosen because it took a risk.
First, printing colors in a newspaper is always risky, there are many things that can go wrong between the way it looks on the screen and the way it ends up looking on the newsstand.
And second, design can oftentimes become too decorative without adding any meaning or value to the presentation or to the reader. And fancy headlines or decorative typefaces are one of the easiest traps to fall into.
Here, though, the playfulness of the colors in the type draw the reader into the story package and help capture the story's message. The emphasis of the colors made sense in this case because colored powder was a big part of the ceremony that this story is about. In addition, the photos play well off of each other, and the type fits naturally into that package without being distracting.
