The design Pick of the Week for Week 4 goes to today's front page, designed by Jake Newton. Both this Friday as well as last Friday, he took what could have run as simple graphs and displayed them in bold, dominant and intriguing ways to compliment the centerpiece story. When a story has "numbers" that go with it, it often indicates that the story could lend itself well to a centerpeice design. However, this doesn't always indicate an obvious, easy solution. It is a continuous challenge to present the numbers and stats in new ways, and today's paper is an example of how to do that. This week, the use of the graph immediately conveys the idea of a tuition hike, with the totals piling up over the years. The placement of the photo and the headline also works well to draw the reader in.
