Space-rock duo to debut Friday

For the Jungian Psychonauts, a psychedelic odyssey of the mind is easily achieved with the help of a microphone and a few strums of the guitar.

The duo will make its debut performance Friday along with bands Acer Negundo and Controlled Folly.

“We played open stage before,” said George Anvak, a member of the Jungian Psychonauts. “So, our goal really is just to write a full-length piece and recruit a few more members to be a full ensemble.”

After the crew’s creation this academic year, Jungian Psychonauts claim to have created a unique sound, describing itself as a space-rock duo with an element of jazz thrown in.

In contrast, Acer Negundo, a ’90s-influenced rock band, has also become a member of the local music scene after its first performance during the Halloween block party last year. Though the band has been focusing on improving its sound while performing at local bars, it is preparing for its first tour this summer.

“We really do work on our sound in order to be able to put on a good show for people,” said Adrian Medley, a member of Acer Negundo. “We haven’t been doing a lot but we are doing some. For example, we are going on tour the beginning of August.”

Controlled Folly, the third band in the lineup, has been able to maintain a longer-lasting presence on the Athens stage.

Caleb Brown, the crew’s guitar, banjo, mandolin and fiddle player, — “melody player,” as he calls himself — described the group’s sound as rock and roll, similar to The Rolling Stones and The Ramones with a touch of Mozart.

“We all switch and play different things at different times,” Brown said. “There is always something surprising but we don’t like to talk about our surprises, I don’t even know what to expect.”

Despite Brown’s statement, Medley expects the concert to be a great blend of music and a great way to spend a Friday night.

“It should be a good time,” Medley said. “The guys we are playing with are a bit different but are great in their own way. Controlled Folly always bring a great show and the other guys are new; it’s their first concert and it’ll be a great one.”
