Track and Field: Bobcats a success at weekend tournament, fall short of overall win

Multiple top-five individual finishes at the All-Ohio Championships on Friday and Saturday were not enough to earn the Bobcats a top-five finish overall.

Against 13 teams from around the state, nine Bobcats combined to earn 52 points and sixth place overall on Miami’s campus.

"We were hoping for a higher place this year," coach Clay Calkins said. "But overall, we had some solid performances that are competitive for the MAC and a great point of reference this time of the season."

Finishing with the most points for the Bobcats, sophomore Emily Pifer and freshman Morgan Reichert took third and fifth, respectively in the 5,000-meter run for a combined 10 points.

Meanwhile, Danielle Winningham and Kiley Mathews combined for the second most points with their third and seventh place finishes in the 400-meter race.

Two Ohio seniors added points to the board with top-three finishes. Hope McCarty's was a personal-best record in the 800-meter race. Courtney Weiss finished third in the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best mark.

In the heptathlon, freshman Chanda Cuckler and veteran senior Brittany Tyree each competed in seven events — shot put, javelin, long jump, high jump, 100-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, 800-meter run — and placed fourth and sixth overall, respectively.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Ashley Waddington chalked up a handful of points with a fourth-place finish.

Both relay events also earned points with a fifth-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay (Mathews, McCarty, Tyree and Willingham) and eighth in the 4x100 meter relay (Kaylah Howard, Alexis Geiger, Mathews and Winningham).

With less than three weeks left before the Mid-American Conference Championships, throws coach Nick Pero said he wants the team to strive for better marks.

"I'm greedy,” Pero said. “I want lots of improvements but that should come in time (before MAC Championships).”
