Trustees approve tuition increase

Earlier this morning, in a full-board meeting, the Ohio University Board of Trustees voted to raise tuition by 3.5 percent for the upcoming academic year.

Tuition, which has been $9,870 during the 2010–2011 academic year, will jump $345 to $10,215 for 2011–2012.

The board voted unanimously to raise tuition for next year.

During the past month, there have been multiple student protests, culminating in a silent sit-in led by students at the board meeting this morning.

In a conference after the full-board meeting, C. Robert Kidder, chair of the OU Board of Trustees, said he believed the board made an informed decision.

“While passions exist in these issues, I think the board factored in all of the objective information that it could gather and made what it felt were the best decisions for Ohio University for the long haul,” Kidder said.

Kidder said he received at least 25 phone calls before the meeting from students requesting that the board not increase the tuition.
