Baby Mountain lights the final stage for EDISON

After months of research, writing and preparation, local comedy troupe, Baby Mountain is ready to salute Thomas Edison and graduating seniors as the crew takes the spotlight one last time.

“I’m definitely excited for the show and for everyone to see it because we all have put so much work into it,” said Alex Winfrey, a senior studying video production and Baby Mountain co-founder. “But, it’s also sad because it has been such a big part of my college experience.”

Realizing this would be the last year at Ohio University for Baby Mountain, the crew decided to put their heads together the beginning of Fall Quarter to create one last show, EDISON. The idea was developed after months of research and a mutual appreciation for the inventor. The crew wrote, rehearsed and produced the one man, one night only, 60-minute show.

“We always liked Thomas Edison. He is an American icon,” said Joe Lalonde, a member of the comedy crew and junior studying video production. “It was something that just started out as an idea and we saw all the potential in it and we are really proud of it now. As a result, it’s a comedy show, but I think that it’s going to be unlike any other comedy show that I’ve ever seen.”

The show’s creators include Winfrey, Lalonde, Zach Coleman, Eudora Peterson, Dan Ahrens, Seth Johnson and Caitlin Walsh.

“I’ve seen every single one of these comedians perform,” said Tim McVey, a sophomore studying history. “I think it’s going to be a pretty awesome show.”

Baby Mountain itself was created four years ago as a result of Winfrey’s need for a different style of comedy and writing. Yet, as the group’s seniors prepare to graduate, the troupe is also preparing to pull the plug.

“At first, I didn’t really understand why they didn’t want it to continue,” Lalonde said. “But, I think they understood the way we feel and it’s definitely bittersweet. I’ve been with Baby Mountain since 2009, my freshman year. It’ll be weird not having Baby Mountain, but I’ll have more free time to do other things as well.”

As the troupe prepares to take the stage one last time, Winfrey parts with one last piece of advice.

“Make sure you do what you want to do,” he said. “Don’t let anyone tell you no.

I think just working hard to make something that you really enjoy is worth it.”
