Crowds swarm for multitude of OU activities offered for visiting moms

From bonding over brunch to meeting at the market, attending sporting events and taking shots at bars, Ohio University students had plenty to do with their mothers during Moms Weekend.

OU’s Division of Student Affairs and Outdoor Pursuits Activities facilitated events during the day to entertain and bring together mothers and their children.

“I’m having a wonderful time,” said Sue Pellechia, mother of sophomore Nicole Pellechia. “We went to the Mom’s Market, and I got a new bracelet and I shoved a pie in a kid’s face for a dollar.”

The Mom’s Market, held at the Ping Center basketball courts, featured a multitude of local businesses and artisans hawking their wares.

Local jewelry artists Kathy Abfall and Jean Spires made their fifth annual appearance at the market with their business Two Friends Gems.

Abfall said that, though the pair does not have a physical storefront in Athens or a website, they sell their designs at local art markets and at the farmers market.

Abfall said the people keep them coming back each year.

“It’s so much fun to talk to the mothers and sons and daughters,” she said.

Saturday night, the revelers headed Uptown and flooded the bars, most of which had a line out the door.

“It is, by far, more crowded this year,” said Anne Mulig, mother of sophomore Mike Mulig.

Earlier in the day, Mulig said she crossed zip lining off her bucket list.

“We went zip lining up at The Ridges,” she said. “It was a lot of fun and a beautiful day for it.”

With the wide variety of events and quality bonding time between mothers and their offspring, both Muligs agreed the weekend was a success.

“It turned out to be an overall spectacular Moms weekend,” Mike Mulig said.
