The Dayton band The Werks is excited to jam for Athens residents at Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery during its current lineup of outdoor festival dates.
The band’s bass player, Dino Dimitrouleas, said The Werks have had good past experiences playing in Athens.
“We’ve played Athens several times, mostly at Jackie O’s,” he said. “There’s a good vibe and the people are always incredible. It’s just a great area of Ohio, and we love to play shows there when we get the chance.”
The Werks have developed more than a modest amount of fandom in Athens, said Dimitrouleas, as evidenced by the successful shows they have played here throughout the years.
“We usually do pretty well there,” the bassist said of Athens. “We usually fill up Jackie O’s and have sold out there a few times. We feel a lot of support in Athens for what we’re trying to do.”
Originally, The Werks got their start here from playing shows with Athens native Papadosio. Dimitrouleas said the two bands would alternate cities, playing together in both Dayton and Athens.
The fact that this show is happening at this time is a bit of an enigma, though, said Dimitrouleas. The band usually only plays at festivals during the summer, because promoters prefer to have lineups of exclusively festival bands to increase ticket sales.
Dimitrouleas said the band plays a lot of shows in bars during the winter, including a show this past winter at Jackie O’s.
With summer in sight, however, he said the band is excited to get back in the festival circuit. Dimitrouleas said they are playing at big festivals such as Wakarusa in Ozark, Ark.; Summer Camp in Chillicothe, Ill.; and Backwoods Bash in Prue, Okla.
However, despite a tour loaded with big festival appearances, Dimitrouleas said they are very excited to return to Jackie O’s.
“We’re very excited to come back,” he said. “Like I said, Athens is a special town. It’s kind of like a second home for us. We get a great response from everyone who lives in Athens and we get a lot of travelers from out of town who come to see us at Jackie O’s.”
