One year after a rainy Nelsonville Music Festival, Minneapolis-based folk group Dark Dark Dark is looking to bring some light, light, light to fest-goers this weekend.
Though it isn’t the quintet’s first time playing in Ohio, it will be their first time at the festival and the state’s Southeastern region, said Dark Dark Dark banjo and clarinet player Marshall LaCount.
“We’ve been touring through Ohio for a few years, having good shows,” LaCount said. “Most recently we were at the Wexner (Center for the Arts) in Columbus. It’s our first time through this part, though.”
‘Dark’ will add Nelsonville to its long list of venues played, making their mark on festivals around the world.
“We’ve been doing Europe and Canada festivals for a couple years now,” LaCount said. “We have done South by Southwest (in Austin, Texas) as well as CMJ and some other small New York City festivals.”
‘Dark’ is recording a new record at its record label Supply and Demand Music, said Tom Weyman, the band’s representative. Songs from the upcoming album are scheduled into this weekend’s set list, he added.
Despite the impressive festival resumé and work in the recording studios, LaCount said there is no shortage of excitement for the Nelsonville gig.
“It’s nice to be playing a festival like Nelsonville,” LaCount said. “It’s great when a festival is carefully curated and has a passionate annual audience.”
The Nelsonville appearance is among the band’s final U.S. tour dates before the new album releases and they are more than excited to add it to their list.
“We’re excited to see Time and Temperature, Andrew Bird, Michael Hurley (and) Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry,” LaCount said. “We pretty much read down the list and someone says, ‘Oh cool!’ to every name.”
