Nelsonville man pleads not guilty to charges of burglary and abduction

A Nelsonville man pleaded not guilty to charges of burglary and abduction last Friday.

Roger D. Williams, 36, was charged with one count of aggravated burglary and one count of abduction after he allegedly forced his way into a woman’s residence on April 29th, according to court documents. He allegedly struck her numerous times and did not let her leave.

Williams was indicted by a grand jury last Thursday and pleaded not guilty to the charge in Athens County Court of Common Pleas the following day, according to court documents.

Williams’ original bond was set at $35,000 but was increased to $500,000 with 10 percent allowed after his indictment, according to court documents.

It would cost $50,000 for Williams to be released from the Southeastern Ohio Region Jail, where he has been held since Sunday.

He is due back in court for a final preliminary hearing June 26 at 10:30 a.m..

Williams could be sentenced to a maximum of 15 years in prison and a maximum fine of $30,000 if convicted of both charges, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

There have been 14 misdemeanors and five felony cases against Williams in Athens County Municipal Court since 1993, according to the court’s website.

Williams has a pending misdemeanor case in the municipal court that come out of the same incident. He was charged with one count of assault, a first-degree misdemeanor, according to court documents.

He could be sentenced to a maximum of six months in jail and a maximum fine of $1,000 if convicted at a trial, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
