Soccer: Offensive changes fuel Bobcats

Before the start of the spring season, Ohio was defined by uncertainty. Drastic roster changes during the offseason made it impossible to determine how the team would perform after losing 11 seniors to graduation. Entering their last game of the spring season, the Bobcats have silenced their doubters.

Ohio’s offense was the least known part of the team’s game before its first spring match. But a few structural changes in the attacking third have led to an increase in shot production and a more lethal squad.

“I'd say it’s still developing, but there certainly have been improvements,” coach Stacy Strauss said about the offense.

The team scored eight goals in four games and also played a partial scrimmage against Marshall. Leading the way with two goals each are Cat Rogers and Maggie Murnane. Erin Schwenke also has made solid contributions from the midfield.

“Maggie, Cat and Erin Schwenke have really developed an on-field awareness of each other,” Strauss said.

Many of the Bobcats’ goals have come from crosses or corner kicks. Strauss attributes this to high-quality and consistent play from forward Veronica Rock and defenseman Paige Howard.

Strauss said tinkering with positioning has also aided the Bobcats.

“Schwenke has been a great addition to the midfield,” Strauss said. Schwenke, entering her senior season, has spent the majority of her tenure in the Green and White as a forward.

The Bobcats will try to improve their offense against Wright State Saturday. The match kicks off at 1 p.m. While the Raiders are on the Bobcats’ 2012 fall schedule, Strauss does not expect there to be much scouting.

“Sure, there will be some advantages to playing them,” Strauss said. “But, like us, they will be a different team (next season).”
