Student arrested for "works bomb"

An Ohio University student was arrested during the early morning hours Thursday for allegedly making an explosive device.

Jarrett M. Allman, 19, appeared in Athens County Municipal Court on one count of possession of a dangerous ordinance. Allman pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on his own recognizance, according to court documents.

Ohio University Police found two plastic bottles deemed “works bombs” in the grass near Wilson Hall and OU parking lot 114, according to OU Police records.

The bottles were located beneath a window with a damaged screen, according to the report.

A “works bomb” is typically made by combining cleaning products with aluminum foil in a two-liter bottle, which creates a chemical reaction that creates pressure and will force the bottle to explode.

The name comes from the toilet bowl cleaner The Works, which is commonly used in the reaction.

After investigation, OU Police Officer William Carsey arrested Allman at 3:59 a.m. for allegedly making the devices. Allman lives in Wilson Hall, according to court documents.

Carsey and Allman could not be reached for comment.

Possession of a dangerous ordinance is a fifth-degree felony. Allman could be sentenced to a maximum of one year in prison and a maximum fine of $2,500 if convicted at a trial, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

Allman is due back in court June 4 at 2 p.m. for a preliminary hearing.
