In reaction to Ohio University’s Board of Trustees decision to raise tuition, Student Senate has started a letter campaign to state legislators to reinstate funding.
Trustees unanimously voted in favor of a 3.5 percent tuition increase at its April meeting after officials met with students and explained a large decrease in higher education state funding.
“This is a good way to reach out to people who are really making the policy and that’s our folks up at the Statehouse,” said senate President Kyle Triplett.
Each of senate’s 12 commissions was given the names of legislators to write, representing senate as well as OU, Triplett said.
Triplett encouraged the letters to be handwritten and personalized because he believed it would be more effective.
“From their perspective, they’re giving us a lot of funding,” Triplett said. “I personally disagree with that, but we’re writing to them. We need to use their lingo.”
