Meno's death ruled hanging

The death of a 21-year-old Ohio University junior found Sunday has been ruled a hanging.

The Athens Police Department responded to a call at 23 Palmer St. in the evening hours of June 3 and identified the deceased as Stephen Rung Meno, of West Lake, Ohio.

“It seems to be, as far as we can tell, by hanging,” said Athens County Coroner Harold Thompson, who received the preliminary autopsy results Wednesday.

Meno’s official time of death is estimated to be between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., Thompson said.

No suspicious elements were uncovered and no foul play is suspected in the death, Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle said in a news release.

The body was transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for the autopsy, and the official ruling will not be known until toxicology and tissue tests are complete, Thompson said.

“That is why this is only a preliminary final ruling,“ he said. “The official ruling will be in around eight to 10 weeks when we get everything,” he said.

Meno, the son of Melissa Rooney and Stephen Meno, graduated from St. Ignatius High School and was studying in OU’s College of Business and a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.

Meno’s family did not want to comment.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Angela Merici Church in Fairview Park, Ohio. An interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

A candle light vigil will take place at 9 p.m., starting at College Gate and walking to 23 Palmer St., according to a Facebook event. More details can be found here
