Special teams players put on "watch" by national awards list

There is no doubting that offense and defense are important to winning football games but what can put a team on that next level is contributions from special teams units.

The College Football Performance Awards Watch List features two Ohio players that could influence the national scene. The list includes redshirt senior kicker Matt Weller and fellow redshirt senior cornerback and kick returner Travis Carrie.

Weller was named to the CFPA watch list for the specialist trophy and Carrie is among 30 other players vying for the CFPA punt returner trophy.

He set six personal records and five career records, as well as the Mid-American Conference special teams player of the year this past season.

Carrie led the team in punt return average, with 12.5 yards per return. He also led the defense with four intercetpions.

Ohio begins the 2012 campaign against Penn State at noon September 1 on ESPN.
