Though college is known as a place with stressed-out students, tight budgets, endless working hours and piles of homework, Ohio University and Athens have been able to adopt a way to cope thanks to a rising comedic atmosphere.
Blue Pencil Comedy: Stand-up
Blue Pencil Comedy was created three years ago, thanks to laugh-inducers including Eudora Peterson, Daniel Ahrens and Max Cothrel. Within the past year, the crew has created a four-day lineup of comedy nights, including Comedy in the Round at Athens Pyramids; comedy night with visiting comedians at Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery; and Open Mic Night at The Front Room. The group continues to create new material, lots of laughs and room for new up-and-comers. The comedians of the troupe pride themselves on providing an environment for comedians to improve and students to take a load off with a few laughs and a good beer.
Fridays Live: On-Air
Taking the spotlight is this crew’s specialty as they go live every Friday night on local television station AVW. The comedians also provide laughs online for students with a busy schedule. With writers, actors, comedians and an entire camera crew, this troupe very rarely disappoints and creates a great opportunity for students to see how exactly shows similar to Saturday Night Live tick.
Black Sheep: Improv
Despite facing some problems while finding a permanent home for their talents, this improv group loves to live in suspense, as do their audience members. Attending one of their Thursday night shows guarantees big laughs and a larger smile, even through the worst of finals week. Thanks to their chalkboard of suggestions, the group is open to a slew of ideas and only need one prop — a chair — to portray them.
