Ohio University will be reducing its electricity Tuesday night because of a state of electrical emergency in southeast Ohio.
Stephen Golding, OU’s vice president for finance and administration, emailed faculty and students asking them to reduce their power use from 3:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the email, those on OU's Athens campus are asked to do the following:
—Shut down and unplug all computers that are not in use
—Operate laptops on battery power
—Plan print runs at another time of day and shut down and unplug all copy machines
—Unplug fax machines, refrigerators, coffee pots, space heaters and additional appliances
—Open the blinds and shut off all unnecessary lights
—Turn off window air-conditioning units
—Adjust thermostat to a higher temperature
—Unplug all unnecessary appliances and chargers
OU has partnered with Energy Connect in a Demand Response program that will reimburse the university for electricity reduction, according to the email.
Tuesday's reduction should earn the university more than $47,000, which will be used to meet budget shortages during the 2012-13 school year, according to the email.
