Unpredictable pipe causes gas leak

A gas line separated from an Athens home Thursday evening but was safely shut off before any damage could occur.

Athens firefighters responded to an all-call and were dispatched to 39 Briarwood Dr. at about 6:20 p.m. Thursday after the natural gas line from the street separated from the house, said Athens Fire Lt. Charles Adams.

Upon arriving, firefighters shut off the gas line and evacuated nearby homes in a 1,000-foot radius to ensure the safety of homeowners. Firefighters also sprayed water on the property as a precaution.

The separation was caused simply by age, Adams said, and there is nothing homeowners can do to prevent such an occurrence.

“In my 20 years as a firefighter, I’ve never seen anything like it,” Adams said.

The homeowner declined to comment.

No injuries occurred and a representative from Columbia Gas arrived at the home for repairs. The homeowner was able to safely re-enter the home.
