ACHS includes local dogs in Halloween fun with Dress Up Your Pup

As people plan their getup for the impending Halloween party, one organization is looking to give canines their own virtual, costumed brigade.

The Athens County Humane Society (ACHS) has prepared a social network contest titled Dress Up Your Pup, which will be used to improve the use of ACHS’s online presence and to help highlight the organization’s cause.

“I hope people at OU, and in the Athens community, will become aware that the Athens County Humane Society is excited to reach out and engage the community,” said Sara Dixon, a sophomore and member of ImPRessions on the ACHS account. “This event has great potential to bring our community together, pets and humans alike.”

To help boost interest in the cause, ACHS has joined forces with the Athena Grand cinema to give out passes to the new Tim Burton film, Frankenweenie, to the top dogs in the competition.

“I think it's only appropriate that we give our participants a chance to see where the inspiration came from,” said, Hannah Wheeless, a sophomore studying photojournalism and an associate with the ACHS account.

Submissions can be added until Sept. 28. A panel of judges from ACHS will judge the dogs to select five best-dressed dogs. From there, the Athena Grand will help by posting the pictures of the top five dogs in the cinema’s lobby, where the movie-going public can learn about the cause and pick their favorite pooches.

“The Athena Grand was very willing to help out with the cause,” said Kate McFadden, a junior and the main account executive for ACHS and leader of the competition. “They know donations will be generous and help promote our case.”

The top three winners will receive a gift basket for both the owner and the dog, and the families of the top two dogs will win four free passes to see Frankenweenie.

“Since the ACHS is a non-profit community organization and they have no paid staff or office, my account and I want to raise as much money and awareness as possible to help the animals,” said Katherine Cameron, a sophomore and associate to the ACHS account.

So far, ACHS has received at least 15 submissions to participate in the contest.

“We are very grateful to have such a generous community,” Wheeless said.
