The Performing Arts Series kicked off Parents Weekend Friday night with a performance by Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr., winner of season six of America’s Got Talent.
Murphy, who won the show with his uncanny renditions of Frank Sinatra songs such as “My Way,” crooned his traditional Rat-Pack-style songs as a band partially comprised of Ohio University faculty members played along.
Ticket sales covered the $14,000 it took to bring the reality show star to Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, said Andrew Holzaepfel, associate director of the Campus Involvement Center.
“It’s definitely an exciting weekend,” Holzaepfel said, referencing the three Performing Arts Series shows that occurred this weekend.
Murphy took time in between songs to talk about himself to the audience, sometimes telling stories that would last for 15 minutes or more.
Murphy made sure to thank his fans multiple times for voting for him on the show, and made it a point to stress he owed his success to his fans.
He also made it a point to mention that he is nominated for Reality TV Personality of the Year for the National Reality TV Awards, which will be decided on Sept. 24.
