Judson Claiborne, a Chicago-based band formed in 2007, will be stepping into the spotlight of The Union’s stage for their first Athens performance Wednesday evening.
“It’ll be a representation of what the band has been working on since we got together like six years ago,” said Christopher Claiborne Salveter, the band’s guitarist and songwriter. “We will be playing some very new things and stuff from our first record, so it should be danceable.”
Though the band doesn’t have a full schedule, they are currently preparing to release their most recent album and make a few more stops on the road. The album was recorded in seven days in a remote location in Michigan, Salveter said, adding that it was an amazing experience without any distractions.
“It’s about turning 30, and essentially it’s about the struggle to continue to grow up and experience new things as we get older, as you start to create more boundaries with people and the world around you,” Salveter said.
The crew is still young, but Salveter said they are finally moving toward a sharper sound and more collaboration amongst the band members. He compared the feeling of finally completing the album to “freshly brushed teeth.”
“I think our sound is getting more honed in and we are figuring out what each song is and how to play together and listen to each other more,” Salveter said. “Your sound is getting clearer and sharper . . . and that reflects in the record.”
Salveter also pointed out that the crew has played at the unofficial Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C.
“I think the fact that they played in front of the president is pretty cool,” said Bobby Levine, a freshman whose major is undecided. “I’d go and see them play; I’d get to see a new band.”
For a portion of the year, the band will be taking time off as Salveter returns to Washington, D.C., to receive his bachelor’s degree. Despite the pause, the guitarist said he was planning to take to the stage solo.
“I think we’re short of chilling for the rest of the year because it’ll be a busy 2013,” Salveter said. “We just need to finish planning for next year. Hopefully we will be back in Athens if Athens will have us.”
