Construction plans, bylaw adjustments approved at first meeting

Ohio University’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved all resolutions at their first meeting of the 2012–2013 school year.

Trustees approved the establishment of the Center for Intervention Research in Schools.

“This would allow researchers to be more competitive for grants,” OU Trustee Janetta King said. “We are particularly excited about it.“

The board also unanimously agreed to the construction of two capital projects: the replacement of the Kantner Hall roof and improvements to Clippinger Laboratories.

The roof replacement will cost the university $800,000.

The Clippinger construction has a total project budget of $1.5 million, $1.1 million of which will be funded from state appropriations. The final $400,000 will come from university reserves.

“The committee strongly recommended the approval of the roof resolution,” OU Trustee David Wolfort said.

The governance committee approved minor editorial changes, King said.

“We made adjustments to our bylaws, which are essentially the mechanisms that show how we organize ourselves and how we do our work,” King said.

The Academics Committee unanimously agreed to the offering of a new entrepreneurship certificate by the management department in the College of Business.

“This would mean great implications for many majors across the university,” King said.

The Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to one final resolution: the notion to give OU President Roderick McDavis a 6.3 percent raise.

McDavis’ new contract guarantees a base salary of $415,000, compared to his current salary of $390,321.

After the resolution was unanimously approved, everyone in attendance at the meeting gave McDavis a round of applause, leaving him speechless.

“In honor of the president’s leadership, we believe that this proposed contract is very appropriate of his hard work and dedication and leadership that he has exhibited during some very challenging times,” said OU trustee chairwoman Gene Harris. “We want to keep this president, and we know that a person with his level of accomplishment could have a choice of (going) anywhere.”

McDavis said that he was very happy about the raise and expressed his thanks to the Board of Trustees on numerous occasions throughout the meeting.
