Council to discuss land acquisition, streetlight funding

Following last week’s first meeting Athens City Council meeting since August recess, which had a presentation from Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle and an executive session, Monday night's meeting will be broken down into four committee meetings.

The Finance and Personnel committee will propose a street light funding ordinance as well as an ordinance to fund maintenance repairs to the City Building.

The Transportation Committee will bring up an ordinance relating to infrastructure improvements on Columbus Road and Lancaster Street. The ordinance will be related to the design of the improvements.

The planning and development committee will discuss a land acquisition, a topic of which led the council into an executive session last week.

When the city is discussing acquiring property, the state allows Council to deliberate the matter in an executive session, said councilman Elahu Gosney, D-at large in a previous Post  article.

Gosney added that he does not know whether a vote is forthcoming to accept the land — which the state offered the city — where the abandoned Bi-Lo gas station is located.

“It’s best that we discuss these matters in private,” he said.

But accepting the property could be a double-edged sword for Council because though the land could be developed or sold at the city’s discretion, the underground tanks could be contaminated and expensive for the city to treat.

If the city does not accept the abandoned station, the state will acquire the land, said Councilwoman Michelle Papai, D-3rd Ward in a previous Post article.

The City and Safety Services Committee is also scheduled to discuss new business at Monday night's meeting at 7 p.m. at the City Building.
