Ohio University’s Graduate Student Senate kicked off its Monday meeting by
appointing a new member to the council. As a first order of business, graduate
student Ed Gaither was voted in as the new Vice President for Committees and
Legislative Affairs.
Bobcats for a Conflict-Free Campus took a stand at this week’s GSS meeting.
Conflict-Free President Sarah Volpenhein visited the meeting to remind members of last year’s statement passed by OU’s Honors Tutorial College asking the university to acknowledge the link between violence and electronic companies’ mineral use in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
They also talked about the ad-hoc committee that will address socially responsible practices that was established by OU President Roderick McDavis during the 2011-12 school year.
In its statement, OU acknowledged the link between violence in the Democratic
Republic of the Congo and the products the university purchases that may
potentially contain conflict minerals.
“It is our hope that the university will follow through with its statement and
urge companies to be conscious of the minerals they are buying, as well as pass procurement and investment policies [against these minerals],” Volpenhein said.
GSS voted to support and encourage the administration to keep moving forward with this issue by shopping for technologies that do not contain conflict minerals.
