Habitat for Humanity working on 29th house in Athens County

Athens County Habitat for Humanity has recently begun work on its 29th home, built at 2 Alexander St. in Athens.

“The project’s been going well, but it’s really only been a few weeks,” said Kenneth Oehlers, Executive Director of Athens County Habitat for Humanity. “We haven’t had any crazy problems yet."

Houses built by Habitat for Humanity cost, on average, $80,000. This house, which will be finished in approximately four to eight months, is sponsored by the Women Raise the Roof coalition in addition to also being a partnership of the city of Athens.

“A couple things are required to be a Habitat family,” said Oehlers. “The family must have a need of some sort and must have an ability to pay their mortgage (once the house is built) as those mortgage payments will go back to Habitat for Humanity and used to build more homes. They must also be willing to contribute 250 hours of sweat equity, meaning construction work.”

Habitat for Humanity is expected to reveal the family that will live in the new home this week. Stay with The Post for updates as we receive them.
