Two years after graduating from Ohio University, a group of Bobcats held the first “Game Night” of what they hope to be many more to come.
Kyle Perkins, a 2010 alumnus and founder of Lightborne Lore, LLC, a video-gaming company based out of Athens, hosted Game Night at The Dragon’s Cup teahouse last week to help promote and provide a different outlet of entertainment for the night.
The game company offered entertainment such as Halo 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, card and board games and free food and tea from The Dragon’s Cup.
Perkins and Michael Blohm, a 2011 OU graduate and the company’s programmer, provided the game consoles and televisions for attendees.
“We’re going to be in Athens for quite some time,” Perkins said. “So we really want to establish ourselves here and let people know that there is a game company in town that totally is awesome and does cool events like this.”
Originating out of a student project in 2010, an action game called Nightshift, the group decided to collaborate on a new game called Cracked, eventually forming the company, Perkins said.
“Initially the company kind of came together slightly after Cracked did, and that was what it solidified around,” Blohm said.
After Perkins graduated and Blohm entered his senior year, Lightborne Lore was in its beginning stages.
“We (had) to know whether we’re going to be doing this for more than just one game and, at this point, plan our lives around it,” Blohm said.
Since forming, LLC has produced Perpetua, a game for smartphones that Blohm said is similar to caring for a virtual pet, but in this case upgrading and caring for a machine.
Perkins and Blohm are hoping to make Game Night a regular event to keep students and community members interested while keeping their eyes out for potential interns.
“We want to let students know that we exist, that they can work for us, that we can give them the production experience without them having to go get an internship out on one of the coasts somewhere or down in Texas,” Perkins said.
