OU ranks near top in research revenue

Recently released numbers show Ohio University in the top ten in yet another category, with money back in their pocket to show.

OU is ranked first in Ohio for research licensing revenue, bringing in $8.6 million during fiscal year 2011 for inventions created by OU faculty, according a news release.

OU ranks fourth in the nation behind Princeton University, Northwestern University and New York University for return on investment in research, with 29.7 percent, or $8.6 million, of the $30.9 million invested in research at the university returning to the institution, according to the release.

In 2006, the university reported $3.2 million in licensing revenue, showing a steady increase over the past six years.

Much of the revenue stems from research done by Edison Biotechnology Institute scientist John Kopchick and his graduate student, Wen Chen, in 1987 for discovering and licensing a “growth hormone receptor antagonist” with Pfizer Inc. The drug is marketed as Somavert and is used therapeutically for individuals suffering from acromegaly, a severe form of gigantism.
