OU Trustee Chairwoman Gene Harris retires as Columbus City Schools superintendent

Gene T. Harris, superintendent of Columbus City Schools and chair of the Ohio University Board of Trustees, announced today that she will be retiring from her position as superintendent on July 1.

“I’m honored to have served our students and district for 37 years, 35 as part of the Columbus City Schools. It has meant the world to me,” Harris said in a news release.

The announcement was made at Garfield Elementary School, where Harris attended when she was a child. She later moved on to begin teaching in the same school district in 1975, according to the news release.

Harris has been superintendent of Columbus City Schools since 2001. The school district is the largest in Ohio, with over 50,000 students and over 7,700 employees, according to the district’s website.

Harris became chair of the Ohio University Board of Trustees at the June 22 trustees meeting. She received a Ph.D. in educational administration from OU in 1999, according to a previous Post article.

Harris’s term on the board ends next year, according to the Board of Trustees website.
