Pat Kelly incident to be investigated by Attorney General's office

Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly is being investigated by the Attorney General's Office following allegations of assaulting a man on Saturday.

David Jenkinson of Albany filed a complaint against Kelly on Monday, claiming that he was assaulted near a fundraising event in Jacksonville for Kelly's re-election, Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn said.

“I contacted the Ohio Attorney General's Office, and when I spoke to Mike DeWine ... and confirmed that they would be willing to look into and handle the matter on their own terms,” Blackburn said. “Other than the complaint that was filed to me, the rest of the case is out of my control."

Jenkinson said he was handing out flyers containing excerpts from an Athens News story about an alleged rape accusing Kelly's stepson, and Jenkinson said Kelly that demanded to see the flier.

After reading it, Kelly allegedly crumpled the flyer and shoved it into Jenkinson's left shirt pocket, Jenkinson said, adding that he has cancer in his right breast and was caused great pain by the alleged incident.

Kelly could not be reached for comment.
