Soccer: Bobcats achieve longest winning streak in 8 years

Ohio freshman forward Holly Harris put the finishing touches on a weekend sweep Sunday, scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory against the Cleveland State Vikings.

Ohio’s streak of four games is now the longest winning streak since 2004.

The Bobcats wasted little time as Harris scored the first of her two goals in the ninth minute.

Harris said she was excited she finally put away two goals this weekend, after taking several shots in the home stand.

“Everybody can score,” Harris said. “Cat’s had her glory and hopefully she continues that but everybody has a chance and I guess today was my game.”

Ohio coach Stacy Strauss said Harris was overdue for her first goal of her career.

“Holly’s probably the most prolific goal scorer of the freshman class,” Strauss said. “I think we’ve felt like its just been coming and we were happy for her today that she was able to finish two.”

The Vikings answered right back a minute later with a goal of their own by Vickie Havas after a botched save attempt by Ohio goalkeeper Mattie Liston.

After halftime, sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Amari replaced Liston. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Fryan, who finished the match, replaced Amari after she accumulated just 21 minutes in net.

Strauss said she made the change because she wanted to get her two other competent goalies an opportunity to play and they delivered.

Harris scored again in the 61st minute off a corner kick by Cat Rogers. The ball was headed by Ohio freshman Brieanna Charlebois and then kicked in by Harris.

Despite the shutout streak coming to an end, Ohio’s defense was strong again, only forcing the trio of keepers to make three saves in the match.

Ohio senior midfielder Cat Rogers said the defense played an integral role in the success of the three keepers Sunday.

“They’ve played huge for us the last four games we’ve won,” Rogers said. “They’ve done amazing keeping the other team’s shots limited and not letting them get good chances on our goalies.”

Strauss said she was proud of her defense after facing a tough Vikings squad.

“Cleveland State is a difficult team to defend because they play so direct,” Strauss said. “I thought that we did a good job to drop when it was necessary and make sure that those balls didn’t sneak in over the top of us.”
