Hallowpalooza celebrates with laughs for elementary students, concertgoers

Although typically known for their serious attire, members of the School of Music know how to let their hair down for a night of fun and laughs with Hallowpalooza V: Something Wicked This Way Hums.

The one-hour concert, put on by Athens Community Music School and Arts for Ohio, will demonstrate a variety of the school’s instrumental ensembles, primarily highlighting the school’s symphony orchestra.

“We want you to come and, this time, we are hoping you laugh,” said Elizabeth Braun, director of the Athens Community Music School. “Thanks to the excitement of Halloween in Athens, we’re able to hold such a fun event for students.”

Highlights that can be expected from the show include spoofs of music from movies such as Jaws; classical standards including the Nutcracker Suite; and Internet sensations such as the Angry Birds theme music. Additionally, multiple musicians onstage will be dressed up and acting in costume.

“Students of all ages, including OU students, should expect a fun show that is different from a typical concert,” said Claire Berlin, manager of communications and marketing in the College of Fine Arts.

In addition to the evening show, the School of Music will also hold a 10 a.m. show for local elementary students from Nelsonville, Athens and Megis County. The school expects about 1,400 children to be in attendance.

“In an area like this, kids have never seen an orchestra before,” Braun said. “This show provides them with a fun and unique introduction.”

The morning show has been a tradition of the School of Music since its first Hallowpalooza show five years ago. Travel accommodations for elementary students will be provided by Athens Community Music School.

Above all else, Hallowpalooza tries to be a fun, family-friendly alternative to the Uptown Halloween festivities, Braun said. It should be more humorous than scary, and will feature lighthearted music in combination with spooky effects. Costumes are also encouraged for audience members.

“Basically, it’s going to be a fun, relaxed concert, and everyone should be able to have a fun time,” said Steven Huang, director of orchestras.
