OU student pleads not guilty in alleged Convo assault

An Ohio University student pleaded not guilty to assaulting another student in The Convo parking lot at his arraignment hearing Wednesday.

Reid J. Tilton, 20, pleaded not guilty to one count of felonious assault at his arraignment hearing in Athens County Court of Common Pleas.

The charges stem from an incident Sept. 23 when Tilton allegedly attacked OU student Austin Wright in The Convo parking lot, threatened his life and broke his finger, said Keller Blackburn, Athens County Prosecutor.

Tilton’s address is listed as a room in The Convo.

Judge L. Alan Goldsberry determined that Tilton will have to undergo an alcohol and drug assessment because Assistant Athens County Prosecutor Michael Prisley said that Tilton was intoxicated during the incident.

Tilton is still enrolled at OU; however, he might be expelled because of the alleged incident.

Interim Vice President of Student Affairs Ryan Lombardi said he was unable to comment about the specifics of the incident or the condition of the alleged victim because of federal privacy laws.

Tilton is currently being held on $25,000 bond, with 10 percent allowed at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

Felonious assault is a second-degree felony and Tilton could be sentenced to a maximum of eight years in prison and a maximum fine of $15,000 if convicted at a trial, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
