Ohio University alumna Elizabeth Farmer recently donated $145,000 to the Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education for its Child Development Center.
The CDC is a childhood education learning lab, where students research childhood development in order to improve parenting techniques, according the news release.
Cathy Waller, the director of CDC, hopes that this donation will facilitate CDC’s goal of "effective strategies to work with parents and build a strong classroom and community.”
CDC is currently working on a program to promote healthy eating habits in children. By cultivating a garden children learn to enjoy vegetables like radishes and zucchini because they learn about these vegetables through the process, Waller said in the release.
Farmer’s purpose in the donation was to improve the lives of Athens’ children, as well as to educate and inform parents of the best childcare methods.
Farmer said in the release she wanted to give back to an important part of my life, having been deeply involved in OU’s community as a sister of Alpha Gamma Delta. She hopes to promote the development of future OU students by giving to the children of Athens.
"Gifts like this help us forge ahead with creative programming and collaborations and partnerships that bridge gaps, solve problems and create productive citizens,” said Dean of the Patton College Renee Middleton.
