"POWER Hour" session to meet Tuesday night

POWER/GAMMA will meet at 7p.m. Tuesday night for the annual October “POWER Hour” session on alcohol.

The group, a combination of two student organizations, helps advocate health-related concerns on Ohio University’s campus, said Terry Koons, associate director of the Campus Involvement Center.

POWER, Promoting Ohio University Wellness, Education and Responsibility, addresses health and lifestyle problems that are relevant to college students while GAMMA, a group of greek life students, promote peer group education, Koons said.

POWER Hour is held every Tuesday night during the school year and is free to attend, said Kristina Washington, assistant director of health promotion Campus Involvement Center

“(Alcohol is addressed because) there are students who have had issues and consequences for high-risk drinking,” Koons said. “The program looks at the legal and judicial side effects of high-risk drinking.”

To help students better remember information, the POWER Series is interactive through games and activities, such as jeopardy, and award prizes at the end of the night, he said.

In addition to prizes, Koons said some students attend to receive extra credit in their health classes, adding that the turnout depends on the topic.

“We could have anywhere between five and 70 people,” he said. “Each week it varies.”

Power Hour topics are decided from requests, Koons said, adding that anyone can request a program at the Campus Involvement Center in Baker University Center.
