Student charged with felonious assault

An Ohio University student was arraigned Monday morning for allegedly assaulting another student Sunday morning.

Keith M. Lucas, 19, was charged with one count of felonious assault after allegedly striking David R. Speier, also an OU student, according to court documents.

Lucas, of Chicago, allegedly struck Speier in the face, causing several facial bone fractures, on West Green at about 3:50 a.m. Sunday.

Lucas lives in Boyd Hall, according to court documents. Ohio University Police Officer Jason Schoonover arrested Lucas.

He was released on his own recognizance after his arraignment hearing in the Athens County Municipal Court on Monday.

Felonious assault is a second-degree felony and Lucas could be sentenced to a maximum of eight years in prison and a maximum fine of $15,000 if convicted of the charge at a trial, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

Lucas is due back in court Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. for a preliminary hearing.
