Student Senate hears presentations on mobile app, dorm renovations

Multiple presentations were given to student senators on Wednesday to keep student representatives updated on what’s happening around campus.

Representatives from the Campus Involvement Center, the Facilities Department and the Appalachian Student Delegates presented to senate on a new app for students, an update on the housing plan and what its like to live on campus as an Appalachian student.

Brian Heilmeier, coordinator of campus programs for the Campus Involvement Center, introduced a new mobile application the center rolled out last week for Ohio University students to be more informed as to what’s happening on campus.

“(The) main purpose of it was to keep people informed on what’s going on,” Heilmeier said, adding that the mobile app is currently available on iPhones and Androids.

The application will soon be connected to more student organizations to increase the number of events the application holds, Heilmeier said.

Another presentation was given to student senators concerning the OU Housing Plan and how it’s progress.

Plans are being developed for the renovation of Bush Hall on West Green, said Christine Sheets, assistant vice-president for capital and Facilities planning, adding that other projects are in the works as well.

A $1.25 million renovation to Galbreath Chapel is underway and the renovation of Counseling and Psychological Services at Campus Care on West Green are slated to start soon, Sheets said, adding that minor capital work is taking place on East Green and South Green as well.

“You’re going to be able to experience it and have a voice at the table,” Sheets said to the senators. “When you come back to campus in twenty years, you’ll say I don’t remember being here.”

Mackenzi Bentley, an Appalachian Student Delegate, presented to senate on the struggles college students from a 205 square mile area that constitutes Appalachia face in their education.

Senators also debated and ultimately passed a resolution to spend slightly over $100 to fund the visit of Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit to Nelson Commons on West Green.

The purpose of the visit is for students to meet with and ask questions of the provost over dinner at Nelson, senators said.

The Senate Appropriations Committee’s balance at the meeting was $147,610.11 and Senate’s balance was $22,837.43.
