Athena Cinema brings 'Animal House' back to the screen for Dads Weekend

Dads coming into Athens this weekend should bring their togas.

From Nov. 9–11, the Athena Cinema will be showcasing the classic college movie Animal House in celebration of Dads Weekend on campus. The movie will be shown at 9 p.m. Friday and at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Nov. 10 and 11.

“We’ve been trying to program more classic movies in our theater,” said Chris Iacofano, executive director of Athena Cinema. “We have to find these films that are cross-generational, and Animal House is one that definitely reaches out to multiple generations.”

Much like September’s screenings of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the screenings of the John Landis movie will continue the Athena’s process of broadening its audience throughout campus and Athens by showing popular, classic films.

“We just wanted to make an event that would be fun for OU Dads Weekend,” said Alexandra Kamody, managing director of the theater. “Animal House is an age-old movie that appeals to a wide audience.”

Emerging Pictures — the “largest all-digital specialty theater network in the United States,” according to its website — will make the presentation of the film possible.

As the theater makes its transition to digital throughout the year, much like the majority of theaters throughout the country, the screening of this film will give audience members a good idea of what they can expect in projection quality in the future.

Iacofano assures that the general moviegoer will not notice any changes and that only the most diligent of film studiers will pick up on the differences.

“I hope they would have bless(ed) fun watching this film,” said Hsing-ning Chang, head projectionist. “Sitting in a theater watching a comedy that fits the theme of the weekend is not only fun, but also relaxing.”

The Athena Cinema will continue to reach out to its audiences and help bring classic films back onto the screen. From Thanksgiving until Christmas, the Athena Cinema will be showcasing classic Christmas and family movies such as The Grinch, A Christmas Story and others on Saturdays, with the price of admission being a can of food to give to charity. More screenings will continue in the spring.

“I think as we go into spring, we will be hosting more of these type of screenings on a regular basis,” Iacofano said.
