Bain & Co. consultant to speak at annual conference

A representative from Bain & Company will speak on campus this week, as part of a conference organized by the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity at Ohio University.

The 10th Annual Financial Services Conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, on the second floor of Baker University Center. Attendees must register in advance in Copeland Hall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday. The cost will be $5 and includes lunch and admission to the discussions and keynote presentation.

David Friedman works as a consultant for Bain & Company — a separate entity from Bain Capital — and intends to speak about his experience in the corporate sphere and how students can set themselves up to become a part of the business world, said Bryan Andress, a senior studying accounting and finance.

“Part of what I hope to really talk about and really get (attendees) to understand is how competitive the world is out there and how they can best position themselves to get a career ... what it’s going to take for them to get that,” Friedman said.

Friedman graduated from OU in 2005 and received a master’s from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in 2011.

“The whole goal of this is to get people from the industry, get them in front of our student and basically enlighten everybody of ... how to progress in the industry,” Andress said. “It’s supposed to be a very educational experience.”

Before the lunch and keynote presentation, there will be four, hour-long panelist discussions: Banking and Corporate Finance; Insurance and Financial Planning; Investments; and Accounting. Attendees can select two panels to attend during the morning, Andress said.

Delta Sigma Pi organizes the conference and eventually aims to imitate large financial symposiums like the RISE forum at the University of Dayton, Andress said.

“What we’re attempting to do here is to try and build the same platform that will hopefully someday be kind of the same thing (as the RISE forum) — right now (attendance is) only about 150 students and faculty,” he said, noting that attendance has risen in recent years, but the new semester class schedule might hinder many students from attending.

Bain & Company isn’t the only national financial institution that will be represented at the conference, said Bryana Arancibia, a senior studying marketing and director of marketing for Delta Sigma Pi, in an email.

Other companies in attendance will include PricewaterhouseCoopers, PNC, Cardinal Health, KeyBank and Nationwide Insurance, according to a news release.
