Band adjusts sound according to venue

Old Hundred will return to Athens Saturday night to play at Casa Nueva with more experience, but will maintain the same style and attitude.

The indie folk rock band — made up of Blake Skidmore, Jon Helm, Nate Gelinas, Hal Hixson and Gordy Smith — produced its album at 3 Elliot Music Studio in Athens and while doing so, the town became a second home to them.

“On a weekend like this one — close to home — we will head down in the afternoon, do dinner with the producer of the album, do the show, get a hot dog, sleep on someone’s floor, go to Bagel Street and then just enjoy Athens,” said Skidmore, singer and guitarist for the band.

During the past few months, Old Hundred opened for Mumford & Sons, released its album Time in the Wild, played at the Nelsonville and Midpoint music festivals and appeared on Paste Magazine’s “10 Ohio Bands You Should Hear Now.”

“One would think we would be most excited about opening for Mumford & Sons,” Skidmore said. “But that same week we got our album back and that really excited us. We get more excited about doing unique shows and trying out new things.”

Old Hundred’s shows range in style based on where it is playing, Skidmore said, adding that for a place like Casa Nueva, the sound has more rock in it.

This winter, the group will produce a new album with just as much diversity as its shows, Skidmore said.

“It’s always a fun time to be in Athens,” he said. “Casa takes great care of us, and the town is a great fit for what we do musically.”
