Chmiel takes county commisioner seat

Cheers and glasses were raised throughout Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery, 24 W. Union St., as results of Democrat Chris Chmiel’s victory poured into the crowded barroom.

Chmiel defeated his Republican opponent Randy Mace for the Athens County commissioner seat Tuesday night with a 28-point lead.

Preliminary results show Chmiel won 14,213 votes — or 63.87 percent — and Mace garnered 8,041 votes — or 36.12 percent, according to data from the Athens County Board of Elections.

“I worked hard,” Chmiel said, “and it was good to have the primary where I got to get out to the voters and go door to door.”

Chmiel had nothing but respectful words for his opponent.

“(Mace) made me a better candidate,” Chmiel said. “I hope he continues to make this county a better place.”

Chmiel will earn a salary of $55,524 as county commissioner.

The new county commissioner said he is ready to begin with plans to improve the county and increase citizens’ involvement in operations of county government.

“I am excited about the opportunity to serve the county,” Chmiel said. “I’m going to improve our energy efficiency and help get more people involved in our Democratic process.”

Mace could not be reached for comment.

The final results from the Athens County Board of Elections will not be released for another 10 days.
