Hoping to continue its tradition of showing Latin American culture on film for the students, the Latin American Film Series will screen Biutiful at 5:30 p.m. in the Scripps Auditorium on Friday.
Nominated for two Oscars, including Best Foreign Film and Best Actor for Javier Bardem, Biutiful explores the relationship of a dying father who looks to protect his children and the life of crime and challenges behind it.
“The film is very representative of Latin American culture, and we hope that students will be joining us to explore the culture and gain a stronger understanding of what it means to be a Latin American,” said Cherita King, president of the Latin American Organization, better known as Organización Lationoamericana, or OLA.
OLA has screened 10 films throughout the semester as part of its Latin American Film Series, all of which were filmed in Latin America. Biutiful, though, is the first film in the series to have been filmed outside of the region; the film was shot in Spain, and will be presented in its natural language, but will feature English subtitles.
“I think that the film really has a global perspective of people living in Spain,” King said. “Biutiful is a good visual representation of how lots of immigrants live, how black markets work and what goes on within the country.
The Latin American Film Series continues to hope that these movies give a political and social critique of the culture of Latin America, King said.
