Ohio basketball received a commitment Oct. 6 from senior Wadley Mompremier from Miami Senior high school in Miami, Fla. and may soon ink his name with the Bobcats.
Mompremier, a 6’9 220 pound center, said he would sign a National Letter of Intent with Ohio this week or next week.
His coach, Marcus Carreno said Ohio’s recent success and coaching staff is similar to the culture of Mompremier’s high school and that had a big impact on his decision.
“He was extremely interested,” Carreno said. “They have a championship program that is based on winning which is pretty much what we have here at Miami high and what we build here throughout the year.”
Carreno said Mompremier stands out from other 6’9 players because of his athleticism and ability to bring a range of skills to the court on the offensive and defensive side of the court.
He added that the Ohio coaching staff cultivated a great relationship with he and Mompremier.
“I thought it was a great fit and Wadley started liking them more and more and (he) started to build a relationship with the assistant coaches and I think it just started from there,” Carreno said.
While Carreno said Mompremier could contribute to the team right away but needs to work on rebounding, which will be a point of emphasis this year.
Mompremier said the coaches, the familiarity of the offense and the Sweet 16 run, also played an important role in his decision.
“It had a big part because they are doing very well and I always like to go to a program that’s doing good and they’re doing real good,” he said.
His ability to shoot the basketball is a facet of his game that Mompremier feels will win fans over, but first he has to work on his strength.
He expects big things from Ohio this season.
“They got a good team they went to the Sweet 16 last year and I feel like they will probably go to the Final Four this year,” Mompremier said.|
He has not taken an official visit to Athens.
