Music to teach the masses

What: Music of Argentina and the Andes

When: 8 p.m.

Where: Glidden Recital Hall

Admission: Free to general public

Two world-renowned musicians will be holding a recital Tuesday night as part of a program to introduce students to ethnic styles of music.

The musicians, Pablo Salcedo and Oscar Puebla, are visiting professors of the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, located in the capital city of Mendoza, Argentina.

Salcedo is a professor of world flutes and saxophone, and will be showcasing his extensive array of woodwind instruments that have roots in Andean music and other Latin American areas.

“We will show very simple instruments without mechanisms; it is just a person and cane,” Salcedo said about the various woodwind instruments. “We think students and the audience will connect with this simplicity. I appreciate the simplicity that connects the heart with the song; we think that an instrument is a bridge in that way.”

Puebla, a professor of guitar and Latin American musical performance, will be accompanying Salcedo with his guitar on several compositions throughout the recital, as well as playing some music based in Brazilian jazz, which he said is his favorite to play.

He will also play some pieces rooted in tango, a genre of music that has very strong cultural roots in Argentina.

Salcedo previously performed at Ohio University about 10 years ago, playing in a group called Markama that specialized in Latin American music. This is the first time that Salcedo will have played at OU as a solo artist.

Alison Brown Sincoff, associate professor of flute at OU said that the recital was a great chance for students to see cultural music that they had not seen before, and that it would hopefully spark interest in getting students to study abroad.

Matt James, a professor of saxophone and jazz studies at OU, said that the relationship with the School of Music and Salcedo started around 2002 when a colleague from Argentina set up the residency with Markama.

Salcedo and Puebla will also be holding a pre-recital lecture in Glidden 476 at 6:45 p.m. to talk to students and show the ethnic instruments that will be played later in the night.

“I think it is going to be a great night of hearing the music of Argentina and the Andes Mountains,” James said about the performance Tuesday night. “It will be a great night of music making.”
