Unused prescription drugs now have a place to go in Nelsonville besides the toilet or the trash, thanks to a new prescription drug box program that started Monday.
Residents of Nelsonville can now drop off unused prescription drugs in a drop box anytime a police officer is available at the police station located at 211 Lake Hope Drive in Nelsonville.
“Many prescription drugs can be deadly if they accidentally get into the hands of a child or if they are abused,” said Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine. “Many agencies just don’t have the money in their budgets for proper disposal units.”
Funding for the drop box program comes from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, the Ohio Department of Health, and the Drug Free Action Alliance.
The prescription drug box program in Nelsonville follows research from the Ohio Department of Health that shows southern Ohio as the epicenter of the prescription drug abuse problem in the state.
Creating the drop box program was one of the Nelsonville Police Department’s goals, said Nelsonville Police Chief Jason Wallace.
“The Nelsonville Police Department is excited to partner with the Attorney General’s Office in providing a means for the proper disposal of unused prescription and over-the-counter drugs,” Wallace said.
