OU Center for Entrepreneurship celebrates week of innovation

Ohio University will participate in a weeklong event encouraging students to share creative ideas to expand career opportunities.

Global Entrepreneurship Week is a celebration of future innovators whose ideas drive economic growth and expand human welfare, according to the event’s website.

OU’s Center for Entrepreneurship is celebrating for the first time along with the entire nation — as well as 123 other countries — said Lynn Gellermann, executive director of the center.

“The purpose of this week is to celebrate innovators and job creators who bring ideas to life,” Gellermann said.

So far, about 60 students have come to the first free luncheon hosted by the center, which is expected to host 250 or more students later this week, Gellermann said.

“We had students from six different colleges (within OU) come today to get free pizza and information about the different opportunities that OU has to offer,” he said. “We’re really trying to engage students all across campus.”

The different events for this week include a video competition for students with a cash prize. The prize will be awarded to the student who creates a video that captures the true essence of entrepreneurship, according to the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs’ website.

There will still be free lunches from Wednesday to Friday in the Amanda J. Cunningham Leadership Center, said Brittany Murray, graduate assistant to the Voinovich School.

The event is funded by the center and OU, but the expenses are minimal, Gellermann said.

“It’s mostly about reaching out to students to make sure they are aware of the opportunities that are given to them,” he said.
