Correction: In the Nov. 30 issue of The Post, damage to a telescope after a fire at the Research and Technology Center was mentioned in a story; however, the telescope had been removed from the building before the fire. The story also misstated the day on which a construction worker was injured at the Schoonover Center. He was injured Wednesday.
Flames burst from the top of the Research and Technology Center early Friday morning, engulfing structures atop the roof and sending embers high into the night sky.
Athens Fire Department responded to a fire at the building, located at Richland Ave. and President St., at 12:20 a.m. Friday. According to Athens Fire Chief Bob Troxel, no injuries were reported.
The fire broke out on the roof of the building and caused extensive damage, Troxel said.
Firefighters put out the fire about an hour after arriving on the scene.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Troxel said. He did not have an estimate of the damages.
This was the second time this week the department’s $1.1 million fire truck has been used, Troxel said. It was first used in response to an injured construction worker at the Schoonover Center Wednesday. The fire truck arrived in Athens in January.
