The Post's past and present commemorated in Ohio Congressional Record

On Tuesday night while The Post alumni gathered in Washington, D.C. to celebrate its 100-year reunion, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown commemorated the independent student newspaper in the Congressional Record.

The commemoration recognized the paper’s 13 Pulitzer Prize winners and ability to adapt to a digital shift in the new industry.

“Throughout the next century, The Post will undoubtedly continue to play a critical role in training student-journalists to shape and inform Ohio University,” Brown said. “As we mark this milestone, it is my privilege to salute the students who work to keep this publication alive while fully participating in our first amendment freedoms.

The commemoration also highlighted notable alumni, such as Jessica Wehrman, a reporter for The Columbus Dispatch, at its Washington Bureau and a 1997 OU alumna.

“The Post was an invaluable experience for a young journalist, but it was even more invaluable for learning about everyday life,” said Wehrman, who was a past local editor. “The Post was where you got to be a journalist. You succeeded or failed, but you lived it all.”

Brittany Kress, head of The Post Alumni Association and a 2007 OU graduate, has organized Post alumni events in New York, Columbus and Washington, D.C.

“It is really thrilling to have the milestone of 100 years be recognized and preserved in the record of the country and the government,” Kress said.

Post alumni gathered in Athens this past April to celebrate its centennial.

“It’s been a pleasure following in the footsteps of and getting to know some of the talented writers and journalists that came through this place,” said Pat Holmes, editor-in-chief of The Post for the 2012-13 school year. “It’s been a fun centennial year. This is just a testament to how talented ‘Posties’ can be and have been for 100 years now.”
